Miaofei Jiang's inspiration for this project stemmed from the city itself. Known for its traditional Chinese garden design, Suzhou provided the perfect backdrop for Jiang's vision. The designer sought to harmonize her modernist sensibilities with the Suzhou vernacular, resulting in a design that is both contemporary and culturally relevant. The use of whitewashed plaster walls, moon doors, and intricate garden architecture are nods to the city's architectural heritage, reimagined in a modern context.
What sets the MZS Design College apart is its unique approach to space utilization. The college serves as a hub for teachers and students to engage in the teaching, research, and creation of arts and crafts such as lacquer art, bamboo carving, and silk painting. The furnishings, made from discarded branches, bamboo pieces, and hand-strawed hemp ropes, were created with the participation of students, infusing the space with a unique educational significance.
The realization of this project was a feat of creativity and resourcefulness. The furnishings, crafted from recycled materials, were not only cost-effective but also environmentally friendly. The participation of students in the crafting process added a layer of educational value to the project, transforming the space into a living classroom where students could learn by doing.
The project, which began in December 2014 and was completed in November 2015, faced several challenges. The task of renovating an old school building on a limited budget and creating a space that was both modern and culturally relevant was no small feat. However, the end result is a testament to the power of design to transform spaces and inspire creativity.
The MZS Design College has been recognized for its innovative design and cultural relevance, winning the Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2019. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation, technical excellence, and artistic skill. The award is a testament to Miaofei Jiang's vision and the transformative power of her design.
